Rethinking Sight Word Instruction: A More Effective Approach for Kindergarten

Like many kindergarten teachers, my approach to sight words has evolved. In the past, I relied heavily on rote memorization drills during phonics instruction. While this can benefit some students, it’s not a one-size-fits-all strategy. Rethink sight word Instruction based in the science of reading and foster a deeper understanding of these essential words with these literacy centers and assessments.

First,the concept of “sight words” is that they have tricky spelling patterns and can not be “sounded out” or decoded letter-sound or phonics pattern knowledge. This is only true for a small percentage of sight words.

Second, I created much larger sight word flash cards that I use to teach my students new phonics patterns. Third, I do not display these on a wall or pocket charts.I just use them during whole-group phonics instruction and during my reading groups. Lastly, I find they work much better, and without the crutch of a word wall visible. With this method my students learn them much quicker!

These cards are used specifically during whole-group phonics and reading groups, not displayed on a permanent word wall. This approach has yielded impressive results – students are grasping sight words much faster without the crutch of a constantly visible word wall.
