An
interactive read aloud is the purposeful read aloud of a story to focus on
specific content, central theme(s), and vocabulary. They are an essential component to balanced
literacy that provide many opportunities for all students to engage with rich
texts. Interactive read alouds are
typically done whole-group with pauses throughout each read to:
- discuss
the text and theme - discuss the illustrations and meaning(s)
- make
predictions - make
connections - have
conversations
Some of my most favorite interactive read alouds are during the
Halloween season. They are books about being yourself, sharing your
passion, teamwork, accepting differences, and helping friends.
And my top ten Halloween interactive read alouds are:
Bonaparte Falls Apart by Margery Cuyler
The Little Kitten by Nicola Killen
Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds
Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams
The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Byron Eggenschwiler
The Hallo-Weiner by Dav Pilkey
Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins
